Samurai Spirit: Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Life
Author | |
Abstract |
The samurai prepared themselves for battle through physical practice, and the study of the arts. These ancient stories that inspired warriors so long ago have special significance for today’s teens who face battles of their own: battles against bullies; battles with self-doubt and lack of confidence; and battles with the injustices they see around them. Burt Konzak has taught martial arts for over 20 years and has used these stories, drawn from sources including the Hagakuri, the Book of Five Rings, and other Japanese classics, to help young people gain emotional and mental strength. Whether or not readers are interested in the martial arts, they will find centuries of wisdom in this fine collection.

“Samurai Spirit” by Burt Konzak is a fabulous book full of short stories about samurai. This book is composed of exciting stories of three to five pages in length. Each story introduces a samurai encountering a problem and explains how this samurai solves the problem, attempting to reach a positive conclusion with violence used as the last measure. This book is easy to read, the stories all have morals and as an added bonus, the author gives real-life experiences in which he drew on his training in karate. This book gives many examples of how being a samurai involves not only martial arts training but training in arts and meditation. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the martial arts, meditation or mediation. Five-star book.
