Grade 3-6-The strength of these titles is in the wonderful color photographs that highlight ancient artifacts and architecture from each of these countries. Not only are there beautiful close-ups of artwork, but also pictures of working archaeological dig sites and less-than-perfect examples of finds at these sites. The weakness of these books is the writing. It is stilted, simplistic, and dry. Also, each title has one simple map that gives no clue as to where the country might be located on the globe. Glossaries and pronunciation guides are basic. Lists of further reading offer some good examples of other books for this age range. Web sites are also included, but several of them were no longer active when tested. These books are not first purchases, but would be useful where demand is high. The "Eyewitness Books" (DK) offer much better fare for young archaeologists.
